My name is James (or Jimmy) and I’m into riding. Any type of bike. Anywhere.
And farming. Especially small scale intensive organic vegetable farming.
This year, I have decided to combine these passions and hit the road for an East Coast cycle tour from Brisbane to Hobart visiting small farms along the way. I will be leaving on the 12th of February 2016 and should be on the road for about 6 weeks or more. It is my first cycle tour ever and I have been wanting to do it for a long time.
The ride is being done in conjunction with a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to start a backyard based urban farming project in Brisbane when I return. More info to come in next post.
One thing I am also quite passionate about is reducing my environmental footprint and having learnt a great deal about our food systems in the past few years, it shocked me to realise how far most of our food comes from and the environmental impact of this transport. In an effort to bring attention to the ridiculous amount of distance our food travels before it gets to our plates, I will be dressing myself up as giant orange carrot for the duration of the ride.
It’s only 2,500 kilometres. How hard can it be?
